A Blades of Exile Scenario
v1.4.0
The Brotherhood Of The Hand
Written by Chris "Drizzt" Risberg
The Brotherhood Of The Hand is designed for high level parties,
and is rated R.
Many thanks to the beta testers for this scenario: Ruediger and Jayne, and much
additional feedback from Skyle for this release. It escapes me why I forgot to thank
Jayne and Ruediger in the previous outland.txt files, but they are finally properly
noted here with this release. Many apologies.
Graphics (once again) freely borrowed from:
Dark Elf (Drizzt) - Aceron
Arch Warlock (Kamil), Axe Champion (Samuel), Golden Knight, Juggler,
Menion (Stranger) - Relhan
Sage (Messenger) - Drk Draxis
Royal Soldier (Captain Miller), Royal Guard, Red Guard, Shadow Dragon - Tim Farland
Jelly Cube - Luz Piazuelo
Spirit, Lich dialogues - Motrax
Warrior dialogue (Camteron) - Fiend's BoE Page
These authors have given much to the Blades community by offering their work for
use by others. Thank you! All other graphics were modified by me, or taken from
public domain pictures.
The version of this scenario that you have may not be the latest! Check the web site
at http://members.aol.com/risberg/blades and verify that you have the most up to date
release.
General Hints:
The Brotherhood Of The Hand is not a very long scenario, and can be completed with very
little problem solving and only a few larger battles. I have tried to make the main
emphasis on the story, and have put as little as possible in the way of its telling.
Those of you who have played my first scenario The Forsaken will recognize names and
references to events that occured in it. It is not required that you completed The
Forsaken to play this scenario, although I recommend it. Some things will make a
bit more sense.
To fully uncover all of the events in this scenario, however, will require a bit more
effort than required to just complete it. There are some difficult and (I think)
rather unique puzzles. Feel free to email me or post to one of the BoE message
boards for hints. Links to these message boards can be found on my Blades web page.
I'd love to hear your comments on this scenario! Please email me, good or bad.
Thanks for trying The Brotherhood Of The Hand. I hope you enjoy it.
Version History:
v1.0.0 - Began work around 11/21/99.
Released for beta testing 3/3/00.
v1.1.0 - Bunch of changes made. Released 3/20/00.
v1.2.0 - Some minor changes, fixed portcullis bug, and nasty bug where if any Jugglers
were killed, the ring was unavailable. Thanks to Caligula for his input and
relaying of comments from the message boards. Released 6/04/00.
v1.3.0 - One very minor bug fix not really worth its own version.
Released anyway 9/29/00.
v1.4.0 - Some changes as recommended by Skyle. Among other things, the trainer .exs
was enhanced with additional items and alchemy ingredients, and identification
and training were added, as training was conspicuously absent after Fort Dulak,
and identification was never available. Released 9/3/01.

Credits and general hints for "The Forsaken"

A Blades of Exile Scenario
v1.5.0
The Forsaken
Written by Chris "Drizzt" Risberg
The Forsaken is designed for medium level parties, and is rated PG-13.
Testers: Skyle http://members.xoom.com/_XOOM/Skyle/Blades/Index.htm
Alcritas http://homes.arealcity.com/Alcritas/index.html
Both of these are excellent Blades pages, probably the two best.
Graphics freely borrowed from:
Tim Farland - Animated Fireplace, Nocturn (purple drake), Pyrog (red bad guy),
and Townswoman graphic
Tim has (I think) the best original BoE artwork I've seen. Check his website at
http://tripod.members.com/~Huitzil/BOE/
Draxis - Dark Warrior, The Lorax, Skeleton (Glauri)
I made some very minor modifications to Draxis' Dracolich to create the Lorax, and
shrunk it to make the smaller version.
Gil-Glorion - Sword Rack, Archer's Target
Jon Richards - Surface Waterfall
Paul Henderson - Grey Tower, Dark Mage
Many thanks for their talent, which is much greater than mine. All other graphics
were modified by me from existing BoE graphics or public domain pictures.
Forsaken trainer modified from the High Level Party Maker by Tarl Roger Kudrick.
The Forsaken is a Blades Of Exile scenario which attempts to be faithful to the
world of Exile, but also tries to tell a new story. This scenario is designed for
medium level parties, but is rated at very high to avoid the HP doubling thing.
Use the trainer that is included if you don't have an appropriate party, but an
experienced Exile player should be able to win with a new party.
Most of what you have to do should be fairly obvious, but if you get stuck,
here are some hints:
Things generally happen in a linear fashion, so complete the mission you were
sent on! There are usually pretty clear suggestions on what you need to do next.
There are a few side quests that have nothing to do with the main story, so if it
doesn't fit directly into the plot, it doesn't need to be completed.
There is no real time limit, so slow down and enjoy the scenery. Some things will
change in the beginning, depending on how fast you do the first few quests, but no
matter what happens the game can completed.
There is a great deal of conversation in this scenario, some of it quite important
to your missions. I have tried to make the appropriate player response as obvious
and logical as possible, usually by keying on the last or one of the last long words.
This is not always the case, however, and some NPCs respond to words in the middle
of their dialogue. A few NPCs even respond to words other than those in their
dialogue, although these are never necessary to complete the scenario. Hints to
these responses are found somewhere else.
You'll quickly find The Spine is a nasty place. I wouldn't suggest going in there
unless you have a reason to, or have something to help you through.
Can't find that last bean pet? Any other questions? Post them to the BoE message
boards! find them at

Thanks again for playing. It took me more than a year to finish this beast, so I'd
love to hear what you think of it. Email me your comments, good or bad. Enjoy!
Version History:
1.0.0 - Began work on the scenario around 9/1/98
Sent out for initial beta testing on 8/4/99
1.1.0 - MANY changes made, last few towns finished on 9/18/99
Finished testing and posted on web page 10/7/99.
1.2.0 - Fixed a bunch of minor bugs, added a bit of dialogue text.
Thanks to Jamie Clark and Ben Frank for their input.
Sent to 2nd scenario design contest and Spiderweb.
Posted on 10/23/99
1.3.0 - Fixed a few minor things, and a not so minor bug with the thief in the
inn of Keptus. If you left town right after leaving the inn, he wouldn't
show up again. Thanks to Andrew Barton for pointing this out (someone
else mentioned this to me before, but I didn't look hard enough. Sorry.)
Posted 11/19/99
1.4.0 - Oops. Found a major bug where Gwennyth would not appear in the Spine
to join the party, and as a result the game was not winnable. Thanks to
Rudiger for helping me find this.
Posted 12/5/99.
1.5.0 - Fixed a few more minor bugs, including (finally!) that pesky warehouse
bug. More thanks to Andrew Barton, who has been a great help in
finding lots of little details to polish this scenario. Many thanks!

Shadow Of The Stranger
A Blades Of Exile Scenario
By Chris Risberg
Version 1.3.0
risberg@aol.com
http://members.aol.com/risberg/blades/
This version of the scenario you have might not be the most up to date! Check out
the web site above for the latest information.
It's finally done. The story that I began over three years ago with The Forsaken,
and continued with The Brotherhood Of The Hand, has finally reached its conclusion in
this scenario. It is not required that you have completed these two scenarios, but I
strongly recommend it.
Thanks are due to the many people who helped make this possible:
My beta testers Skyle, Morgan, Bob the Impaler, Terrors Martyr, and Big Words. They
all contributed to get rid of many bugs, some quite nasty, that would have otherwise
escaped my detection. Skyle in particular offered a tremendous amount of feedback
and testing that greatly improved this scenario. Thanks to all!
This scenario was developed using Skyle's Alternative Bladbase 1.30, which is a
much-improved version of the Bladbase file that comes with the program. Skyle has
fixed many bugs, tweaked some things, added and changed many monsters and items,
creating a solid foundation on which to create scenarios. I recommend it to every
designer.
The artists who offer their work to the Blades community, whose graphics I have
eagerly used:
Aceron - Drizzt, Gwennyth (cloaked), Goe-Maethen (both), various shields and swords,
lightning, dialogues Mages, Stairway, City, Message, Burning City, Desert
Relhan - Stranger (both), Fog, Gravekeeper, Samuel, Drake spirit, Drake skeletons
Simmic - Grate (dialogue and terrain), dialogue Skeleton
Luz Piazuelo - Jelly cube, stairways, Soulless, Gravestone (rounded top),
City, dialogue Night Battle
Fiend's BoE page - dialogues Camteron, Gwennyth, Goe-Maethen, Red Hooded Man, Wizard
Tim Farland - Gwennyth dialogue, Fireplace, Royal Guard, Royal Soldier, Fell Drake,
Gwennyth (in black), Ice Dragon, Elite Guard, Empire Warrior
DRK DRAXIS - Wooden floor set, Wooden wall set, Desert terrain
Andrew Smith - Ice wall
Paul Henderson and Tony Jordan - Ice floors
Justifier - Bat
Camillia Kantola - Desert colossus
I also must thank again Jayne Holt and Ruediger, who offered much input for
Brotherhood, and were thanked within the scenario, yet I inexplicably left them out
of the Readme file. Many apologies.
Evan Williams wrote a good article about the Word Of Recall spell that was the
inspiration for a certain cube-shaped item in this scenario. The article can be found
on Spiderweb Software's Articles and Answers page, and also at the Scenario Design
Resource, found at my web page.
Lew Titterton wrote an article about replacing terrain with items, and I happily did
just that with rugs, plants, and a few other things. This was a nice touch and something
I will do in future scenarios, as well. His article can be found at the Lyceum.
Alcritas first implemented The Way Out special item in one of his scenarios, and he
also deserves credit for other minor inspirations here and there. There is a link to
his Blades page on my website.
Scenario History:
Began work 6/2000 - released v0.0.9 for beta testing on 9/19/01
v1.0.0 - Many changes, released 11/01/01.

Help file for
Shadow Of The Stranger
A Blades Of Exile Scenario
By Chris Risberg
Version 1.3.0
risberg@aol.com
http://members.aol.com/risberg/blades/
This version of the scenario you have might not be the most up to date! Check out the
web site above for the latest information.
Shadow Of The Stranger is designed for High level parties, and rated PG. I have used
a standard six person party with levels ranging from 25 to the high 30's. Despite my
aversion to fighting, there are some rather difficult battles that must be completed,
so a strong party is helpful. Level 20 is a good minimum.
I also recommend that at least one party member can use 7th level priest spells, and
has a reasonable amout of spell points. This is not required until the end of the
scenario, and without it options available to the player at times may be limited.
A certain 5th level priest spell may also make things easier at a certain point,
as well.
Alchemy skill is also very helpful. One might even say it is required at a certain
point, although there is a rather dubious way around this, that is offered to the
alchemaically-challenged. This might be a good time to reconsider any bias you
might have against alchemy. You have been warned.
Special Stuff:
There are a few things unique to this scenario that you should be aware of.
There is a clock counter, so in places where it would be noticed, like outdoors and
towns, day and night will occur. Because of how things work with the Scenario
Editor, a "day" town and "night" town are two different places, separate Blades
towns. However, you won't notice any change the outdoors, which is another
unfortunate limitaton in the Blades Editor.
Make sure you explore towns during both the day and at night! Many things are
different. If you find you can't get into a certain place during the day, come back
at night, and see what you can find. Furthermore, some things might only occur at
certain times of the day or night.
You have a usable special item, called "What Time Is It?", that will give you a
general idea of the time, based on the the position of the sun. Note that inside
caves or similar places, this will not be of much use. Also, time only passes when you
are outdoors, and not in towns, due to further Blades Editor issues. This means
that if you enter a town at night, it will still be night when you leave it, no
matter how much actual time you have spent there. If you want time to pass, leave
town and use the Rest button until you get a message that day or night has arrived.
You will also have a Special Item called the "Cheater Stick". An amazing piece of
otherwise ordinary-looking wood, this stick will appear in your Special Item list
whenever you are near a particularly hard part of scenario (usually a battle).
If you feel the need, you can use this item and the way will be made much easier for
you. However, using the Cheater Stick will not only take an immediate physical
toll on your party, it will also change your reward at the end of the game. Only
those who make it throuh the entire scenario without using the Cheater Stick will
receive the best reward.
<New to this version!>
If you get tired of tree climbing, check your Special Items. You can turn this
On and Off by pressing the <Use> button.
General Hints:
The Cheater Stick is always helpful, but it will usually only help with a specific
problem (can't kill a certain monster, or trapped somewhere), not with the general
question "Where do I go next?"
Different things happen during the day and night. Make sure you explore the towns
fully!
Listen to what people tell you. Usually what you need to do next is explained
fairly clearly. At one point you will be given a choice of multiple quests. If you
can't complete one of them, try another.
There is one point in the scenario where a 5 or 6 PC, fully-loaded (with items) party
could run into problems with unintended item loss. If this applies to you, you might
want to put some of the non-essential items in a storage area as soon as you find it.
You will always be able to retrieve these later.
Some of the very observant among you might, on a few occasions, notice invisible
creatures in the walls. These creatures are my way of compensating for shortcomings
of the Blades engine, or creating some effects otherwise impossible to do. Killing
these creatures is NOT part of the story or required in any way . . . they will
leave you alone, and it's best if you leave them alone, as well.
If you are hopelessly stuck, send me an email at risberg@aol.com. I will answer as
quickly as possible. You can also post at the message boards listed on my web site
(the address is above) or at the Spiderweb message board.
Two Specific Hints:
If memory is not your strong point, following is a list of cube destinations.
Initial state - Bobling
(from initial)
Pull - Secluded Hut
Push - Weilim
Pull, Push - Schernbuk
Pull, Pull - Boat Landing (south)
Push, Push - Capital
Push, Pull - ????? (side quest)
Pull, Push, Pull - ????? (end)
If you can't get in the secret Brotherhood Outpost, push the button
on the stalagmite. Then from the lower left corner, 10 X N, NW, NE,
N, NE, NW, and you're in.
